Everyone calls it “The PIT,” but it’s an endearing term for one of Pawleys Island’s most popular eateries

Pawleys Island Tavern, known affectionately as The PIT, is a favorite restaurant and hang-out for locals and visitors alike, with its “classically shabby” atmosphere and outside courtyard and music venue.

The restaurant, located in the heart of Downtown Pawleys, has an old classic beach vibe with lights in the trees over a covered stage and a tiki bar outside, and an intimate stage, tables and bar with thousands of dollar bills lining the walls inside.

“We strive to provide a safe, fun, entertaining experience for everyone,” said owner Becky Davis. “It is a place for parents with kids, golf buddies, groups of friends, or just couples out for a special evening.”

On most nights the restaurant is open, especially on weekends when there is a band playing and the weather is nice, cars fill up the parking lot and overflow into the surrounding businesses.

So, what makes The PIT so special? We have whittled it down to five reasons: reasons: atmosphere, cuisine and drinks, entertainment, service, and community involvement.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere at the PIT has been described as Shabby Chic and very eclectic. Cozy up by the fireplace (in cooler seasons, of course) at the smoke-free inside bar or bask under the beautiful canopy of trees out on the front patio. On the back porch, there’s football waiting to be watched and foosball waiting to be played.

“Weather permitting, our award-winning Tiki Bar opens at 4 p.m. every weekend day to take the laid back to the extreme,” Davis said.

Cuisine

The menu at The PIT is fresh and prepared to order. It has been described as Coastal Americana and the restaurant’s peel-and-eat shrimp is a must-try. It is also known for its hand-tossed pizza with only the best mozzarella and toppings.

“From steak to shrimp, grilled mahi-mahi to one-of-a-kind pizza, we’ve got something for every palate — even the kids,” Davis said. “And don’t forget to save room for dessert!”

Other specialties are the Psycho Burger, loaded high with a variety of ingredients, the Country Club triple-decker, crab cakes, and appetizers like fish fingers and tavern fries.

Entertainment

At The PIT, the entertainment ranges from Rock to Country and everything in between, including a lot of local talent.

“Adam Gerrits and I try to book beloved, talented OG’s as well as up-and-coming acts,” Davis said. “We enjoy watching young talent develop, so we book a wide variety of genres, including bands playing originals.”

Service

The professional waitstaff at The PIT strive to make customers feel at home. The staff is well trained to add to the whole experience. Davis said the regular customers make The PIT what it is, a gem in the Pawleys Island area.

“Our staff strives to provide a wonderful experience for all of our customers,” Davis said.

Community involvement

The PIT embraces the Pawleys Island community, working with local charities to support people who need help the most.

“We love our community and support it through several fundraising activities throughout the year,” Davis said. “Let us know if we can help with any fundraiser and it will be our pleasure to be of service.”

Pawleys Island Tavern is located at 10635 Ocean Highway in Pawleys Island. It is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call 843-237-8465 or click here.
